A complaint about free food has attracted users online and gone popular on social media platform X (previously Twitter). A Swiggy Instamart user went to X to voice his displeasure about free tomato addition to his cart. Saying that consumers should have the choice whether they wish a free item or not, the user dubbed it “basket sneaking” and a “dark pattern.” The client also mentioned that his shopping cart should be under “full control,” which he did not experience here.
The customer commented, “Very poor design in Swiggy Instamart, where an item is automatically put to my cart. Though I can’t take tomatoes off of my cart, I don’t want them. This is a dark motif, even though I am not paying for it—basket smuggling.

He continued, “The issue is not with my tomato supply. The issue is that fundamental e-commerce expectations are not being honoured. As a consumer of what I decide to acquire, I should have complete control, yet this is not occurring.
The post generated a range of responses; have a look:
Customer has to have the last word. Offer freebies, but the buyer has to say yes or no, an X user advised. Another pondered, “I’m trying to grasp this better – if it’s free, is it still called a dark pattern? I do know you cannot take it off.
Some users said it might be a glitch. ” Usually I can eliminate the freebies. One asked, not sure if it was a bug or planned. A user jokingly said, “Send it to Chennai, please.” Tomato is almost at Rs 100/kg already.

One person asked, “This suggests the nearby supermarket is having too much tomato supply and want to just throw them off. Turn it over to your bro or watchman. Regarding another online grocery app, a customer noted, “In Zepto, they add the free stuff to the cart but they have a ‘Remove’ button in case you don’t want it.”
