Usually, hospital canteens suffer for their boring cuisine. Patients get low-fat, low-salt, low-sugar meals, but the guest menu is not much better. One English man is bucking that preconception, though. Meet Omar Shaf, who has developed the habit of daily lunch at a hospital for two complete years and has a surprisingly passion for hospital cuisine. You did indeed hear that right! Omar, a Haulgh resident, became viral on TikHub for his passionate reviews of Royal Bolton Hospital’s fries and beans, claims The Bolton News.

Beginning in 2022 on a visit to the Royal Bolton Hospital to check on his dad, Omar’s love affair with hospital food started. Often he relied on the canteen for a snack after working late shifts. Especially the “freshly made lemon drizzle” cakes, the treats soon developed as his guilty delight. “Whenever I feel like treating myself, I head down for one of their cakes.” he said. Omar also set out to sample cuisine at several hospitals. He was eating jacket potatoes at Manchester Royal Infirmary when he wasn’t gowing down chips and beans at Royal Bolton.
Omar says he feels a little ashamed about hospital meals, even if he enjoy them. Revealing to The Bolton News, “I’m really embarrassed to say it, but I hit up all the hospitals to eat in their canteens.” This unusual foodie thinks the whole experience reminds him of “having school dinners.” He laughed, “I go to hospitals instead; I cannot just walk into a school and ask for a school dinner without raising some eyebrows.”

Omar even said he occasionally pays visits to hospitals “twice in one day.” He would slip home between trips to change clothes in order to escape staff recognition. Laughing that he’s “given the game away a bit,” he said, “But I think I’ve blown my cover now.”
